Dean of Student Support and Equity
 
José M. Torres, PhD, President of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) invites you to apply for this leadership opportunity to foster a uniquely challenging, highly personalized program of advanced study for our talented students who understand and share our passion for our mission.  The Dean of Student Support and Equity supports all students by scaffolding and accelerating instruction based on student needs. The successful candidate will begin July 1, 2020.
 
Position Summary
The Dean oversees student support for academics within the residential academy. Oversight encompasses all aspects related to the students\u2019 academic experience from initial placement and scheduling to ongoing academic support throughout the students\u2019 three years at the Academy. The Dean also guides the Academy\u2019s efforts to make certain every student is known, challenged and supported academically in equitable ways. Inherent in this role is the willingness and ability to collaborate with, gather and consider input from students, parents and staff, including faculty. The Dean also facilitates restorative work between/among student to student and student to faculty. In addition, the Dean will collaborate with the Principal, the Dean of Faculty and Equity, and the Dean of Academics and Equity to support the Academy\u2019s mission.

Manage Student Information System (Powerschool) through an equity lens

Develop Master Schedule for course offerings
Schedule students
Manage and store grades
Monitor instructor input of comments and grades
Provide training and support of system
Coordinate placement testing and placement of incoming students

Supervise

College and Academic Counselors (one coordinator, three counselors, and Registrar)
Informational Resource Center (one supervisor, two full-time and three part-time)
Learning Strategies Coordinator (one coordinator and one assistant)
Building Operational Coordinator (one stipended faculty member)
Writing Center Director (one half-time director, who is also one-half time faculty within English department)
Administrative Assistant shared with others in the Principal\u2019s Office

Academic Support through an equity lens

Observe patterns in academic achievement
Review and approve continued enrollment of students at end of each semester
Review and approve extended absences
Review and approve grade appeals
Manage student/faculty grade issues
Oversee budget

Coordinate Intersession

Solicit intersession offerings
Review and approve courses offered
Develop and implement logistics

Primary contact for escalated (post-faculty contact) parental concerns

Investigate and address issues
Coordinate with Dean of Faculty and Dean of Academics with related concerns

Facilitate the implementation of Equity and Excellence for student support

Review existing policies and their impact on students within the classroom through an equity lens
Implement policies and accountability plans related to the scope of this position through an equity lens

Qualifications
Formal Preparation and Experience:
The Dean of Student Support for Academics and Equity position requires: 

Advanced degree; STEM field preferred;
Minimum of five years teaching high-school or college level students;
Significant leadership experience in secondary or higher education;
Bilingual in Spanish desired.

Salary and Benefits:
The position of Dean of Student Support and Equity is an exempt, full-time, twelve-month position.  Salary will be no less than $105,000 and commensurate with the training and experience expected at this level of employment.  An excellent comprehensive benefits package is provided, including health and life insurance in addition to retirement benefits.  The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois retirement systems such as the Teachers\u2019 Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS).
