The Health Educator provides support and educational intervention. (S)he works with program manager and collaborates with community partners to design plans for reaching patients and residents in the counties of Webb, Zapata and Jim Hogg. Under the direction of the program manager, (S)he designs and develops substance abuse prevention /mental health curriculum with emphasis on Opioid Abuse, Depression and Anxiety. The Health Educator also creates supplemental materials and ensures comprehensive evaluation for all program interventions. (S)he implements day-to-day responsibilities related to the delivery of instructional programs at Gateway, including staff training, community outreach and development and maintenance of resource materials.


• Enhances education for patients, families, communities, and personnel to support patient engagement and self-management that includes medical conditions that often co-occur with mental health and substance use disorders (e.g., diabetes mellitus, heart failure, hepatitis, hypertension and obesity).

• Supports the implementation of the Mental Health Education and Substance Abuse Prevention project, including deliverables, evaluation, data collection, and reporting.

• Develops curriculum and prepares manuals, visual aids, outlines, and other materials used in teaching.

• Collaborates with existing community resources to promote the prevention and management of substance use disorders, with a focus on opioid use disorders.

• Functions as part of a team while being self-motivated and self-directed.

• Maintains strict confidentiality of patient information and patient records.

• Documents patient’s participation in program intervention/educational activities in patient’s electronic health record.

• Coordinates and evaluates effectiveness of outreach activities.

• Conducts staff training on the prevention and management of substance use disorders, with a focus on opioid disorders.

• Participates in conferences and professional development activities as requested.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Strong community/public health orientation;

• Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish preferred;

• Experience with patient/community health education;

• Knowledge/experience in mental health and substance use education;

• Knowledge of training and group dynamics;

• Must be able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions;

• Ability to work under minimal supervision;

• Must be able to travel in-town and out-of-town.


• Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Public Health or related field. College education may be substituted for five years of experience.

• Two years of practical education/teaching experience preferred.

• Managerial level computer skills in Microsoft Windows; must include Excel and skills in database management and record keeping.

• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

• Possess means of transportation.

• Texas Driver’s License and proof of vehicle insurance.
