Torres, PhD, President of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) invites you to apply for this leadership opportunity to foster a uniquely challenging, highly personalized program of advanced study for our talented students who understand and share our passion for our mission.  The Dean of Academics and Equity supports all students by scaffolding and accelerating instruction based on student needs. The successful candidate will begin July 1, 2020.
 
Position Summary
The faculty of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is committed to offering an innovative student-centered, constructivist curricula designed to engage students in generative, critical thought.  As the leader of the academic programs of the residential academy, the Dean advances curriculum and assessment aligned to revised Standards of Significant Learning (SSLs) that transitions the Academy to competency and performance-based instruction. The Dean is also responsible for supporting and advancing equity and excellence throughout the academic programs.  Development of an assessment plan including a critical review of appropriate metrics and measures is an instrumental element of this role. Inherent with this role is the willingness and ability to collaborate with, gather input from, and consider input from students, parents, and staff, including faculty. In addition, the Dean will collaborate closely with the Principal, the Dean of Faculty and Equity, and the Dean of Student Support and Equity to support the Academy\u2019s mission.

Supervise

Student Inquiry and Research (SIR) Management team
Faculty in partnership with the Dean of Faculty, and the Principal and Chief Academic Officer
Administrative support with others in the Principal\u2019s Office

Plan, implement and evaluate curriculum design and assessment

Make a general assessment of IMSA\u2019s intended curriculum
Promote and facilitate interdisciplinary curriculum throughout IMSA\u2019s academic programs 
Implement UN-SDGs into curriculum as part of IMSA\u2019s identity as a learning laboratory

Assess student learning and student learning outcomes

Review, revise, and embed into all course syllabi the Standards of Significant Learning (SSLs) in collaboration with faculty
Create and implement a plan to incorporate the work of Office of Institutional Research in the creation and assessment of IMSA\u2019s intended curriculum by each academic team
Evaluate and revise assessments as appropriate to ensure equity

Lead the accreditation process
Lead the process of new course adoption

Ensure Learning Opportunities (the course catalogue) is updated and provided for Board approval
Review and recommend revised graduation requirements as needed
Identify and recommend culturally appropriate and responsive, student-centered  curriculum, materials and approaches for the Academy

Serve as program manager of the Mastery Transcript Consortium
Facilitate the implementation of Equity and Excellence in curriculum and assessments

Review existing policies and practices through an equity lens for their impact on the intended curriculum; develop faculty accountabilities and metrics as applicable in collaboration with Principal\u2019s Office
Implement policies and accountability plans related to the scope of this position

Cultural Competence.  Demonstrating value for, and relating to, one\u2019s own and others\u2019 cultural identity (e.g., language, heritage, and experiences); effectively communicating and collaborating with diverse individuals and groups; applying positive strategies to address social injustices; and instruction and interaction that allow Culturally, Linguistically, and Economically Diverse (CLED) and Marginalized groups to maintain the integrity of their cultural identity, while succeeding academically, socially-emotionally and/or professionally.

 
Qualifications
Formal Preparation and Experience:
 
The Dean of Academics and Equity position requires: 

Advanced degree; STEM field preferred;
Minimum of five years teaching high-school or college level students;
Significant leadership experience in secondary or higher education;
Bilingual in Spanish desired.

Salary and Benefits:
The position of Dean of Academics and Equity is an exempt, full-time, twelve-month position.  Salary will be no less than $105,000 and commensurate with the training and experience expected at this level of employment.  An excellent comprehensive benefits package is provided, including health and life insurance in addition to retirement benefits.  The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois retirement systems such as the Teachers\u2019 Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS).
